What to pack in your hospital bag
Packing your hospital bag is an exciting process in those last few weeks of pregnancy because it means that you’ll soon be meeting your little one as your due date gets close.
Having a hospital bag ready means that it’s one less thing to worry about and that you’ll have everything you need for when that special day comes. When you’re in labor, the last thing you might feel like doing is packing a bag plus it’s better to arrange your bag when you have the time so that you’re well organized.
However, it can also be a little overwhelming knowing what to pack for you and your baby, especially if this is your first child.
We have a checklist of hospital bag essentials that will cover you for labor and recovery. It’s a good starting point, but you don’t have to include every item, and you’re obviously allowed to add other things that you think you might need.
Don’t worry if you forget to bring anything – your partner will likely be able to bring whatever you need, and the hospital can help too. Check with your hospital to see what they supply – some might offer receiving blankets, diapers and clothing.
Here is your checklist:
For you:
- Birth plan and maternity notes
- Pyjamas / Loose-fitting nightdress and dressing gown
- Maternity pads: These are different from normal sanitary pads as you might be needing something thicker
- Nursing bras and breast pads
- Disposable or fabric maternity panties
- Socks or slippers
- Nipple cream
- Nursing cover if you desire some privacy while breastfeeding
- Toiletry bag with toothbrush, toothpaste, body wash, lip balm, deodorant, cream and any face products or makeup that you’d like
- Loose, comfy “going-home” clothes (there’s no need to squeeze yourself into a pre-pregnancy outfit)
- Flip flops
- Tissues
- Snacks and drinks: Labor can be thirsty and hungry work so pack some snacks and bottled water or juice
- Hair elastic or hair tie
- Phone charger
- Books, music, magazines, tablet or eReader
- Extra pillow for comfort
- Earplugs and eye mask
- A notebook or diary and pen
- Camera or phone to take photos
For baby:
- Newborn nappies
- Wipes and cotton wool
- Aqueous cream for washing
- Nappy cream
- Baby grows or other basic baby clothing
- Muslin cloths or “burp” cloths
- Booties or socks
- Baby hats
- Going-home outfit (this is nice for pictures, but not essentials)
- Cellular blankets
- Receiving blankets
- Car seat

It’s natural to feel nervous about giving birth, especially if it’s your first time. This should help you to overcome some of your nerves but if you still need to talk things over or if you have any questions, speak to your doctor or contact our team.
Giving birth to your first baby is a once in a lifetime experience, so you’ll want to ensure you’ve considered everything. From birthing positions and pain relief, to playing music during labour, writing down your preferences in a birth plan will keep your partner and midwife informed of your wishes.
